As we used the airsoft RIS to create the live weapons model (we designed the tooling and mold for superior strength and easily converted from airsoft to live weapon version) in short we made sure we did not need to do / make two separate molds as we saw a way to make one work for both.
So you owners of live weapons can still achieve the same look and function as what we previously offered at a fraction of the cost. All we did to convert the airsoft model to the live weapons version was as follows:
So as you can see from the above list the ONLY required modification for this airsoft model to fit your live weapon is to snip off the hanger points which takes ZERO expertise and about 3 seconds to do.
Pictured above is the MFI MP5A5/A4 RIS / RAIL Hand Guard on an airsoft MP5A4 with an MFI RIS Grip (Top Photo) & then below that is the RIS by itself. This is a copy of the SPECIAL OPERATIONS MP5A5/A4 Hand Guard developed for Foreign Embassy Guards originally designed for real weapons application.
We have an AIRSOFT VERSION that is a plug and play replacement for your standard hand guard.
This item is made via investment casting using Aircraft Grade Aluminum. The MFI MP5A5/A4 RIS HG has 3 integrated rails that are molded into the body of the hand guard. That is to say it is a single piece of aluminum not some bolted together sheet metal plate with rails. This UNIBODY / SINGLE PIECE CHASSIS gives the Airsoft MP5A5/A4 a more ridged frame work which reduces flex.
Each RIS HG includes a steel cross over bolt and screw which replaces your quick release hand guard pin.
Mounts in seconds with ZERO modification. The interior of the hand guard is completely empty. This means that for the AIRSOFT VERSION there is enough room to place in a large battery or the added space allows for much easier / faster battery changes of the standard mini battery. This added room also allows the use of an SD battery as well. For the LIVE WEAPONS version this means lighter weight than other RIS Systems. These are a little heavier than your original hand guard by just a few ounces! Weight is about 10 ounces. This lighter & thinner material allows for greater cooling or the barrel than the original live weapons plastic hand guard. Additionally if you want greater cooling you can always drill or machine holes or slots in the sides and bottom. We have made allowances for this type of customization in our structural design.
SPECIAL NOTE: As with any live weapons component / accessory (especially RIS / RAS) to achieve maximum stability the tolerances for the hook up points MUST be very tight. Especially important for a RIS when used in conjunction with a laser. In order for the laser to retain 100% zero there must be little or no flex or movement between the rail system and the receiver. This is way no one mounts a laser directly to a standard plastic hand guard. To achieve such a stable platform you can expect that the fitting of the hand guard to the weapon will result in scratches to the finish of your receiver. This is unavoidable and we do not worry about this for two reasons:

Rails are standard Weaver with Picatinny style slash cuts every 5mm. Please note that at this time the lower rail is NOT NECESSARILY a 100% true Picatinny profile. 90% of all standard military rail accessories WILL FIT, but if you have a Swan Mounts / Surefire Quick Throw Lever Mounting System / Streamlight Style Mount the lower rail likely will NOT accommodate it's use. The issue here is that 95% of the potential customers we know do NOT use these type of mounting systems. In our effort to keep the cost to a minimum we choose a casting method that does not have a 100% control on the shrink rate of aluminum. This is important to note as the Swan Quick Release Throw Levers and other similar devices have an extremely close / unforgiving and non-adjustable tolerance for the lock up point. If your throw lever has any type of adjustment you will NOT have any problem as we are with in a couple thousandth of an inch of the correct measurement.
In short if you have a Quick Release Style Throw Lever Mount on your accessory that has NO ADJUSTMENT then this item may not be for you. We view this issue more as a short coming of the throw lever manufactures not to have some sort of adjustment in their product. Unfortunately if our RIS does not work with your throw lever then you will just have to buy the more costly Surefire of Knight's RIS.
If you need a 100% Picatinny rail you might consider one of our SINGLE RAILS as ALL MFI Single Rails (4", 6" or 8" individual rails) are 100% Mil. Spec. and will work with your Swan Mounts, Surefire Quick Throw Mounts, Streamlight Quick Detachable Mounts or any other Mil. Spec. Quick throw mounting system. We mention this as we are aware that many of you have been taken in by other unscrupulous real and airsoft vendors that claim to have true Picatinny / Mil. Spec. Rails when the reality is they do not even know what that really means.
The 3 rails are most commonly used with a Pistol Grip on the bottom rail, Flashlight on the left hand side and Laser on the right hand side. Pictured above is the MFI MP5A5/A4 RIS / RAIL Hand Guard on a Special Weapons SW5FS 9mm real weapon. You can see our new Flashlight mounted to the side with a pressure pad reaching down to the MFI RIS Grip. The small thumb size button pressure pad above the longer flashlight pressure pad is for the MFI Laser which is mounted on the reverse side. (See below).
Also in this photo is the MFI 45mm Red Dot / Aim Point Site with Flip Up Butler Creek Scope Covers. The Red Dot is mounted via our Low Profile HK MP5 Style Scope Mount which works on both live and airsoft weapons.
In the photos below you can better see the MFI Laser mounted via the MFI 1" Cylinder Laser Mount that makes the jump from Laser to 1" Quick Release Ring. As you can see the profile of the weapon stays relatively small compared to most other RIS Systems on the market. Critical in CQB situations where space is very restricted.
