BOOKS:
Our Opinion:
If you own only one gun book this should be the one! Covers most countries from 1900 to 1980. 90% of the contents is heavy squad automatic machineguns, assault rifles or submachine guns. 10% is pistols.

Jane's Gun Recognition Guide:
: Soft Cover 7.5" X 5" by Ian Hogg, Rob Adam
Our Opinion:
Although this book is no replacement for the above it is a good second choice until you find Small Arms of the World. Really just a basic reference / recognition guide with some added information. Covers all categories of small arms: Pistols, Revolvers, Sub-Machine Guns, Bolt Action Rifles, Automatic Rifles, Light & Heavy Machine Guns.

Modern Small Arms:
: Hard Cover 12" X 9" by Ian Hogg
Our Opinion:
Great coffee table style weapons book. (Yes we do discuss weapons over a cup of coffee... Might scare the neighbors a little...) Covers some of the more interesting and rare weapons. Touches on all types but, is far from a complete weapons compilation. Not intended to cover everything and does a great job of what it does have in it. Covers: Pistols, Revolvers, Sub-Machine Guns, Bolt Action Rifles, Automatic Rifles, Sporting Guns & Shotguns.
You might have noticed by now that the author Ian Hogg is one of our favorite. Without a doubt one of the foremost and prolific writers on this subject matter. He puts together a superior product with nice color photos on nearly ever project. We consider Mr. Hogg as one of the only writers whom we would buy a book sight unseen without much hesitation.
SPECIAL NOTE: There are a number of different versions and editions of this book. We have the 1983 and 1994 editions. 85% of the photos overlap but there are some significant black and white photos in the earlier edition that are not in the 1994 edition so you might try to find both. We do prefer the 1994 edition though.

VIDEOS:
Stalingrad :
This film is seen from the perspective of ordinary German soldiers at ground level of one of the world's most bloody battles. Stalingrad (the movie) surveys the misery of the battle of Stalingrad, the winter siege that cost the lives of almost one and a half million people, Russian defenders and German invaders alike. Not unlike Spielberg's approach to Saving Private Ryan, German director Joseph Vilsmaier rarely steps outside the action to comment on the higher purpose of the war, assuming the audience is aware of the evil of the Nazi regime and war in general. Stalingrad depicts how well the Soviet mind set eventually gave the attacking Germans an impending sense of doom.
Instead, we simply follow a group of soldiers as they endure a series of gut-wrenching episodes, events which have the tang of authenticity and horror. Vilsmaier has a taste for symbolism and surreal touches, which only add to the unsettling sense of insanity this movie conjures up so well. It does not glorify war, but rather vividly shows the uncertainties and hardships of it.
High Points: Apart from it's vivid view of the cold and desperate nature of this battle and the futile ness of man's actions that war brings... You WWII buffs will appreciate the correctness of materials, weapons and munitions. You actually get to see extremely rare appearances of Teller Mines (T-42) tossed at Russian armor as well as use of "Hafthohlladung 3" hand held magnetic mines used in the proper manor... that is to say the solder lays on the ground under the snow or ditch and waits for the enemy tank to roll by, then he jumps up and attaches it to the side of the tank and pulls the time delay fuse... all while having the advancing enemy troops firing at him. Yes they really did this.
In short perhaps the most realistic war film ever made... including "Saving Private Ryan" which by the way cost about 70 times more.
